RUNE bond rewards on THORChain: when you can access them and how to claim early

THORChain bond rewards are added to your bonded position at every churn, so they compound, but they stay locked with your principal until the node leaves the active set. For most bond providers that makes rewards illiquid for an unknown period. RUNEBond offers an optional, experimental way to claim recent rewards early, for a fee.

This article explains how bond rewards work, when you can normally access them, and what changes when you claim them early.

How THORChain bond rewards work

THORChain is a network that lets people swap native assets between blockchains without a centralized exchange. It is secured by node operators who lock RUNE, the network’s token, as a bond. Holders who do not run a node can add their RUNE to an operator’s bond as bond providers and earn a share of that node’s rewards. (How bond providers work.)

Those rewards come mostly from fees paid by people swapping through THORChain, so they track real usage rather than token inflation. They are distributed at each churn, the network’s periodic rotation of active nodes, and the operator’s fee is deducted at that point.

Why bond rewards are locked

Rewards are not sent to your wallet. They are added to your bonded position, which has two effects:

  • They compound. The next churn pays rewards on a larger bond. (What that looks like over 5 and 10 years.)
  • They are as illiquid as the principal. Bonded RUNE cannot leave a node that is in the active set, so neither can the rewards.

You can normally withdraw both only when the node exits the active set. That depends on the operator’s decision or on the protocol removing the node, and it can take a long time. RUNEBond estimates it per node as maximum time to leave.

How to claim bond rewards early with RUNEBond

RUNEBond’s Claim your rewards feature lets bond providers access recent rewards without waiting to unbond. It relies on a native THORChain mechanism called REBOND, which moves a bonded amount from one address to another inside the same node:

  1. You open the Portfolio section of the RUNEBond app, which lists your rewards and marks the ones that can be claimed.
  2. You press Claim.
  3. A REBOND moves the claimable amount from your bonded position to the RUNEBond Liquidity Vault address on the same node.
  4. RUNEBond’s automated system detects the transfer and sends you liquid RUNE, minus the service fee.

The node operator has to enable the feature by whitelisting the Liquidity Vault address. The step-by-step guide for both sides is in the claim your rewards documentation.

Conditions and fees

  • Only rewards from roughly the last 30 days can be claimed. Older rewards stay in the bond until you unbond.
  • Only rewards from bonds made through RUNEBond are eligible. Manual bonds are not.
  • The service currently charges a 5% fee on the rewards claimed. If you claim 100 RUNE, 95 RUNE reaches your wallet. The percentage can change with operational and liquidity conditions.
  • No fee on standard unbonding. RUNEBond charges nothing when you withdraw your RUNE after the node leaves the active set.
  • Availability is not guaranteed. Claims depend on the liquidity RUNEBond can allocate and pause when the vault runs out.

Full terms are in the terms and conditions.

The trade-offs

Claiming early is useful, but it is not free of risk, and we would rather say so plainly:

  • A short custody window. Your bond itself is never held by RUNEBond. During a claim, though, the rewards being claimed sit in the Liquidity Vault until the system sends liquid RUNE back. That window is centralized and has no insurance.
  • It is experimental. The feature can change or be discontinued.
  • Claimed rewards stop compounding. Whatever leaves the bond no longer earns.

The feature does not change THORChain’s protocol logic or touch validator keys, and it is optional for both operators and bond providers.

Summary

Bond rewards on THORChain compound by default and stay locked until your node leaves the active set. If you need access sooner, RUNEBond’s claim feature can release recent rewards for a fee, with a short, centralized custody window as the trade-off. Before bonding, check both the node’s estimated time to leave and whether its operator has enabled claiming.

Frequently asked questions

When can I withdraw my THORChain bond rewards?

By default, only when you unbond. Bond rewards are added to your bonded position at each churn, and bonded RUNE can only leave a node once it exits the active set. Until then, principal and rewards are locked together.

Can I claim RUNE bond rewards without unbonding?

Through RUNEBond, sometimes. Its experimental Claim your rewards feature lets bond providers claim rewards from roughly the last 30 days early, for a fee, if the node operator has enabled it and RUNEBond has liquidity available. It is not a native THORChain feature and is not guaranteed.

How much does it cost to claim bond rewards early?

The service currently charges a 5% fee on the rewards claimed, so claiming 100 RUNE sends 95 RUNE to your wallet. The percentage can change with operational and liquidity conditions. RUNEBond charges nothing for the standard unbond when a node leaves the active set.

Is claiming rewards early risky?

It adds a short custody risk. The claimable rewards are moved inside the node to the RUNEBond Liquidity Vault with THORChain's REBOND mechanism, and you rely on RUNEBond's automated system to send liquid RUNE back. That brief window is centralized and uninsured, which is why the feature is optional.

Do bond rewards compound?

Yes. Because rewards join your bond at each churn, later rewards are earned on a larger position. Rewards you claim early leave the bond, so they stop compounding.
